Munster AOP: the washed-rind cheese from Alsace and Lorraine that smells stronger than it tastes
Pungent on the outside, surprisingly gentle on the palate. Munster is one of France's most misunderstood cheeses, and one of its best.
Made from cow's milk in the Vosges mountains between Alsace and Lorraine, Munster AOP has been produced for centuries, originally by monks who needed a cheese that could age quickly and feed a community. The rind is washed regularly during aging, which gives it its distinctive orange colour and assertive aroma. The paste inside is soft, creamy and far more delicate than the smell suggests.
Aged for a minimum of five weeks, ours is sold in a 125g format, the perfect size for a cheese board or a simple meal.
How to Enjoy Munster AOP?
On a cheese board
Serve at room temperature alongside a crusty baguette. Some like it with a pinch of cumin seeds on top, a traditional Alsatian touch that cuts through the richness beautifully.
As a meal
Munster is substantial enough to anchor a simple dinner. Serve with boiled potatoes, a green salad and a glass of Gewurztraminer, honest, satisfying and very French.
Melted
It melts beautifully. Use it in a Tartiflette or over roasted potatoes for a deeply flavoured result.
